The Kingdom of God is the sovereign rule and reign of
God. It broke into history through Yeshua the Messiah
and is experienced now wherever people submit themselves
to the authority of the King.
But the Kingdom is not merely a spiritual reality in
the hearts of believers. Its great future fulfilment is
the Messianic Era — the Kingdom of God
established on earth under the reign of Messiah.
The prophets describe this coming age in remarkably
concrete terms: Messiah reigning as David’s heir,
Israel restored, Jerusalem at the centre of His rule,
the nations coming to worship the God of Israel,
justice and peace extending across the earth, and the
knowledge of the LORD filling the world.
“Your kingdom come. Your will be done on earth
as it is in heaven.” — Matthew 6:10
Notice the direction. Jesus did not teach His disciples
to pray that they would escape the earth and go to the
Kingdom. He taught them to pray for God’s Kingdom
to come to earth.
We therefore live between two realities: the Kingdom
has already begun through Messiah, but it has not yet
come in its fullness. When Yeshua returns, the King will
reign openly, the Messianic Era will begin, and the
biblical promise of God’s rule over the earth will
move from anticipation to fulfilment.
