What Do A Brick, A Watch And A Human Being Have In Common?

By | Blogs | No Comments

Walking along with a friend at the base of a remote mountain I find what looks like a brick. A rudimentary, rough brick, roughly rectangular in shape.

Immediately I think, “It is roughly rectangular, it has sharp definition along the edges as if moulded. It has a hardness that indicates that after it was formed it was baked in an oven.”

My friend says, “Ah but it might have been naturally formed that way. It has been known to happen.”

I shrug and to avoid an argument I say, “Perhaps. It looks very much like it was made intentionally but it is possible that with quick heating and cooling of the earth, pressure, time and an earthquake, it ended up like this.”

Then we saw a second and a third brick-like object exactly the same dimensions as the first.

“Still naturally formed?” I ask.

“Possibly. A sheer along a fault line producing roughly the same sized ‘bricks’”

“Ok,” I concede, “it’s possible”.

Then as we walk further we see three of the same ‘bricks’ together in a pattern with what looks like mortar in between them.

My friend looks at me and says, “Hmm.” It was his turn to concede. “That’s a bit harder to explain as a natural formation. It looks like someone did make the bricks and then put them together as a wall.”

I quickly agreed with him, but then I had this thought.

Why, when we see the most rudimentary signs of intelligence indicated in a situation can we quickly admit intelligent thought, design and creation, but when it comes to things more complex we have difficulty?

Well that example was about bricks – basic, inanimate and static.

Let’s add some complexity to this discussion and introduce inanimate objects that are dynamic – they move.

My wife and I are sifting through some old boxes at a garage sale and find a small plastic container. Opening the container I find a whole lot of very small, intricate parts all separated from each other. There are little cogs, spindles, springs, cams, dials. I show my wife.

The little cogs have tiny teeth that obviously have been carefully made to fit into other cogs that are in the box. I would wager that they even have been mathematically designed to create different rotation speeds.

Those cogs have holes drilled in them that fit over the tiny axles that hold them together. Minute tapered screws would screw in to hold the axle to a spring, and a winder.

I look down at my own watch on my wrist. There it is ticking away, keeping almost exact time. Inside it is made up of the very same types of cogs and spindles and springs that are in this little container.

Not for one second do my wife and I consider that those little pieces we can see in the container, just happened to make themselves over time.

We recognise the sign of a thoughtful, creative person who has the skill to make and assemble those little pieces together to make a precision instrument that functions as it was designed to function and to be a useful item.

So with basic unmoving bricks and inanimate moving watch pieces, without hesitation we will automatically admit intelligent intervention.

Now let’s add to this mixture of inanimate, but complex, functioning objects, a much more difficult ingredient to deal with – life.

I’m talking with my friend again and we start discussing where life came from.

We start by talking about ‘simple’ life forms and I say, in the same way that the bricks seem to have the evidence of intelligent involvement, so too even a cockroach or a worm, appear to have been designed. He disagrees and says “No, there is a successive development over time of complexity within these life forms.”

“How did it start?” I ask him.

“A big bang created a spark of life, a very basic life form.”

But even as he is talking I begin to wonder out loud “Really? For a start, how could even one basic life form come into existence from a bang. But even if it could happen, how logically could that first little basic accidental life form survive long enough to then develop a basic form of sustainability of life -ie breathing, digestion, reproduction etc before it died.

“Surely, even if you add a billion years, unless that first life form accidentally had the ability to stay alive, ingest, process, excrete and reproduce from the first second, then it was dead from the start and nothing therefore could follow.”

“I never really thought of it that way” said my friend, “but that’s the way it happened. It’s a fact.”

“Ok” I responded, troubled with his rather baseless explanation.

Then I thought about the watch pieces I found in the container and I began to think about the human body – my human body.

Not so much about cogs and spindles and springs that obviously were precisely made for a special function, but of the major parts of my body.

Starting with my lungs. Without them, I can’t breath so I wouldn’t last even a few moments without this important organ. I say lungs, but even my basic knowledge of human anatomy tell me that that name describes a veritable storehouse of smaller parts that link together and work together with precision the skilled watchmaker could only dream of.

Taking in air, releasing air, little ‘hairs’ protecting the lining, blood vessels taking the oxygen and transferring it to the blood vessels and into the microscopic red blood cells.

Speaking of microscopic red blood cells that are being reproduced all the time, manufactured and then processed by the heart. A ‘simple’ pump connected with all sorts of tubing, and chambers, faithfully pulsing in a steady beat, sending those little life-giving red blood cells all around the body to bring life, warmth, movement, health.

And that blood flows through different diameter veins to the feet below to the brain above. Yes the brain that needs the blood to survive – oh my goodness -the more they research they do on the brain the more miracles they discover.

This super computer we call our brain creates, and thinks; it has a left side, right side, it stores memories, it processes all the information we need. It sends messages to all parts of the body and tells us if we are in pain or cold. It feels love, processes hormones and even informs us of whether we are happy or sad.

The eyes are so complex, I don’t even know how to describe their function to process images, movement, colour and send the information to the brain to explain to us what we are experiencing in front of us.

The senses, touching, feeling, smelling. Our skin, with nerves and receptors, and hairs, and sweat glands to keep us cool, and protects us. That skin if severed will repair itself as if by remote control by creating clots and scars. It covers all of our body, but differently in different parts.

Our hands look so simple and yet peel them back and you see muscles over bones, flexibility in the cartilage, an opposing thumb to hold things, finger nails, complexity that makes the most complex watches seem like a brick.

I haven’t even begun to speak of the spine, the spinal chord, the digestive system, the immune system and what about the reproductive system, different in a man and a woman? One without the other completely formed, in the one instant, means extinction.

If a man ‘evolved’ first. Then while he is waiting for her reproductive system to evolve, he becomes extinct.

If a woman evolved first, then she would be hoping that a man’s reproductive system would quickly evolve before she died and went childless -and yet, intelligent people explain the whole brilliant complex system away by saying that the process is supposed to have taken billions of years.

I guess what I am saying is an honest confession.

If I look at bricks, basic bricks mortared together, I can see intelligent design.

If I look at little, beautiful watch pieces screwed and clipped together, it obviously points to a maker – a very skilled maker.

And when I look at life, specifically the human being – how can I truly say, that there is no intelligent design and creation at work?

The level of complexity of any one of the organs is trillions of times more complex than the most intricate watch.

So why do people really not want to admit intelligent design when it comes to “life”?

Well here’s my thought.

Because with bricks and watches, the intelligence that is observed relates to human intelligence -another human being made it.

Or in the animal kingdom -a bird made that nest, or a colony of ants made that anthill.

But with life? With the human being? Admitting that there is intelligent design behind the complex human being, means intelligence we don’t understand.

It means something – a being greater than me, designed me and made me. And if that is truly the case, then I will actually need to admit it. And if I have to admit it, then what else am I conceding to?

Does that greater being then require me to do something I don’t want to do and be what I don’t want to be?

If I say ‘yes’ to intelligent design, am I also saying that I am now required to be ‘religious’, when I don’t want to be religious.

Yes that’s it. I want to be the master of my own destiny. And while I am the master of my own destiny, I have ‘control’. Well to some degree I have control.

To admit a greater being, means to admit that there is one who designed me and may have a destiny for me. It means that I may need to submit to this being. What if that being is evil and desires to hurt me? It is too painful a thought to endure.

So I will continue to block out the truth of the evidence before me regarding the existence of a Devine being who made me, and continue to pretend, with a great many other people that there is nothing except what “life” or “evolution” accidentally produced with time.

If the time frame is not enough, I will just add more time – that solves everything – just add more time. I will cite proof from books and encyclopaedias, I will find my evolution heroes who are doctors and professors to give credence to these notions.

I will point to fabricated stories of ‘missing links’, hope that someone will uncover that elusive piece of evidence that will confirm my theory.

Yes – evolution, or whatever else I want to call it, therefore becomes that big thing that is greater than me that has ultimately been big enough and powerful enough to have created everything – but unlike a Divine, intelligent creator, it doesn’t require me to submit to it. I can still be the master of my life.

And all the while, as I convince myself of these things that, on closer inspection, my own intellect rejects, the actual unequivocal evidence is staring me in the face.

As I look down at my hand for thirty seconds, there is the proof of intelligent design and skilful creation. In those thirty seconds I breathed and remained alive, my blood pumped life through my whole body, my incredible eyes saw, identified colour, depth and shape and sent the information to my super computer brain which thought for a moment about those masterfully created hands which will probably reach for and pick up my next cup of coffee to be processed by my unbelievable digestive system.

The rudimentary brick and the precision time-piece point to the marvellous revelation that I truly am ‘fearfully and wonderfully made.’

Who is given the Land?

‘’TO YOUR DESCENDANTS I WILL GIVE THIS LAND – Part 12 – Who is given the Land? ”

Genesis 12:7 Then the Lord appeared to Abram and said, “To your descendants I will give this land.” And there he built an altar to the Lord, who had appeared to him.

So we have learned that – it is God who owns the earth and its fulness.

And we learned therefore that God can give it to whoever He wishes to.

And here at Shechem, He proclaims to Abram that “To your descendants I will give this land”.

The previous verse explains that there are already people who are living in the land – the Canaanites.
No doubt they have been buying and selling property, houses and blocks of land just like we do today.

But does God seem to make any adjustments regarding his statement to Abram like “Well Abram, I plan to give you this land, but lots of people own it already so I am going to have to go and get all the ownership title deeds from them and then start the negotiation process.

“I’m pretty wealthy so it shouldn’t be a problem, but it may take a while through the appropriate channels, and the official protocols, and seeing the village headmen, the chiefs, the mayors of the towns, the local and state governments and the satraps and governors and get permissions from the King.”

No none of that. Just “To your descendants I will give this land”.

Why? Because it is His to give.

What about the people who were in possession at the time? The Canaanites?

The truth is, that whenever they arrived after Noah’s Flood, they just wandered in and inhabited the land because it was vacant.

They rolled in one day on their camels and donkeys and decided to picket out their farms and boundaries, put up their tents and assumed ownership.

But in fact they had not received permission or title deeds from the original owner – God.

Being a benevolent God He allowed them to squat there and use the ground, the nutrients, the water, the lakes, the trees, the animals on the land etc, but all until it was time for Him to do with it what He intended from the start.

And on this day when He appeared to Abram in Shechem, He told Abram what He was going to do with the land.

“I’m going to give it to your descendants Abram.”

He actually didn’t even technically give it to Abram in this proclamation. Who did He give it to? Abram’s descendants.

So what do you think about your own property? Your own land that you ‘own’.
Who really owns it? You? The government? Or God?

And what do you say about the people who lived in the very specific block of land that God had already intended to give to Abram’s descendants?
Did they own the land?
Did they have any ultimate rights to that particular piece of land?

What if they had lived there for 50 years? 100 years? 500 years?

Is this fair? Or are these simply the rules of ownership decided on by the original creator of the land?

Can you see a similar situation happening currently in the very same block of land?

If so then, who HAS actually been given the land by God – the owner of the land?
And if so, who are you supporting in this very real, current and ongoing discussion?

His death and resurrection means that Jews and Gentiles have become the physical and non physical descendants of Abraham.

The Jews BY NATURAL MEANS (and the land belongs to them eternally – despite what sinful man may say via the Egyptian, Assyrian, Babylonian, Medo-Persian, Greek, Roman, Byzantine, Turkish, British Empires or the European Union, the United Nations or the surrounding Arab nations). The land has been promised to Abram and his descendants. He appeared to Abram to tell him so in Shechem.

And the Gentiles BY FAITH IN MESSIAH JESUS who have inherited eternal life.
(And I will quickly add, because many of you will say it, that all people – both Jew and Gentile must believe and accept that Jesus is the Messiah to be saved). These have become inheritors of all the promises of Abram by having been GRAFTED into the ‘cultivated olive tree’ – Israel.

Galatians 3:7 Therefore know that only those who are of faith are sons of Abraham.
8 And the Scripture, foreseeing that God would justify the Gentiles by faith, preached the gospel to Abraham beforehand, saying, “In you all the nations shall be blessed.”
9 So then those who are of faith are blessed with believing Abraham.

Are you a Jewish person or a Gentile person?
Which ever you are – are you a believer in Jesus as Messiah?

The Return of Jesus – The Great Jubilee Trumpet

‘’TO YOUR DESCENDANTS I WILL GIVE THIS LAND – Part 11 – “The Return of Jesus – The Great Jubilee Trumpet”

Genesis 12:7 Then the Lord appeared to Abram and said, “To your descendants I will give this land.” And there he built an altar to the Lord, who had appeared to him.

We have been looking at the spectacular entrance by the children of Israel into the Promised land to take up their inheritance promised to them by the Lord to Abram at Shechem.

The battle of Jericho reflects the ultimate PHYSICAL JUBILEE Jubilee – the return of the slaves to their families and the return of the land to its rightful owners.

That’s why there was the LONG BLAST of the JUBILEE TRUMPETS and a GREAT SHOUT.

Have a look in the Hebrew

Joshua 6:5 5 It shall come to pass, when they make a LONG BLAST WITH THE JUBILEE HORN, and when you hear the sound of the trumpet, that all the people shall SHOUT WITH A GREAT SHOUT; then the wall of the city will fall down flat. And the people shall go up every man straight before him.”

Wa’hayah BIMSOK BA’QEREN HA YOVEL ba’same a’chem ke’same a’kem q’eṯ qowl ha’shofar ya·rua kal ha’am TERUAH GA’DOWLAH wa’napalah ḥowmat ha‘ir taḥteha wa‘alu ha’am ish negdow.

Let’s look now at the ultimate SPIRITUAL JUBILEE, when those who have become the ‘sons of Abraham’ by faith in Jesus the Messiah inherit the promises at the end of the age – Mount Zion, and the city of the living God, the heavenly Jerusalem, and an innumerable company of angels. (Hebrews 12:22)

Jesus is speaking to His disciples. Watch for the jubilee trumpets and the great shout.

Matthew 24:29 “Immediately after the tribulation of those days the sun will be darkened, and the moon will not give its light; the stars will fall from heaven, and the powers of the heavens will be shaken.
30 Then the sign of the Son of Man will appear in heaven, and then all the tribes of the earth will mourn, and they will see the Son of Man coming on the clouds of heaven with power and great glory.
31 And He will send HIS ANGELS WITH THE SOUND OF A TRUMPET, and they will gather together His elect from the four winds, from one end of heaven to the other.

1 Corinthians 15:51 Behold, I tell you a mystery: We shall not all sleep, but we shall all be changed
52 in a moment, in the twinkling of an eye, at the LAST TRUMPET. For THE TRUMPET WILL SOUND, and the dead will be raised incorruptible, and we shall be changed.

1 Thessalonians 4:16 For the Lord Himself will descend from heaven WITH A SHOUT, with the VOICE OF AN ARCHANGEL , and with the TRUMPET OF GOD. And the dead in Christ will rise first.
17 Then we who are alive and remain shall be caught up together with them in the clouds to meet the Lord in the air. And thus we shall always be with the Lord.
18 Therefore comfort one another with these words.

Hebrews 12:18 For you have not come to the mountain that may be touched and that burned with fire, and to blackness and darkness and tempest,
19 and the SOUND OF A TRUMPET AND THE VOICE OF WORDS, so that those who heard it begged that the word should not be spoken to them anymore.
20 (For they could not endure what was commanded: “And if so much as a beast touches the mountain, it shall be stoned or shot with an arrow.”
21 And so terrifying was the sight that Moses said, “I am exceedingly afraid and trembling.”)
22 But you have come to Mount Zion and to the city of the living God, the heavenly Jerusalem, to an innumerable company of angels,
23 to the general assembly and church of the firstborn who are registered in heaven, to God the Judge of all, to the spirits of just men made perfect,
24 to Jesus the Mediator of the new covenant, and to the blood of sprinkling that speaks better things than that of Abel.

Revelation 11:15 Then the SEVENTH ANGEL SOUNDED (7th trumpet): And there were LOUD VOICES in heaven, saying, “The KINGDOMS OF THIS WORLD HAVE BECOME THE KINGDOMS OF OUR LORD AND OF HIS MESSIAH, and He shall reign forever and ever!”
19 Then the temple of God was opened in heaven, and the ark of His covenant was seen in His temple. And there were lightnings, noises, thunderings, an earthquake, and great hail.

Revelation 19:6 And I heard, as it were, the VOICE OF A GREAT MULTITUDE, AS THE SOUND OF MANY WATERS and AS THE SOUND OF MIGHTY THUNDERINGS, saying, “Alleluia! For the Lord God Omnipotent reigns!
7 Let us be glad and rejoice and give Him glory, for the marriage of the Lamb has come, and His wife has made herself ready.”

The ultimate jubilee is announced by the heavenly jubilee trumpet and a great shout.

BIMSOK BA’QEREN HA YOVEL – the long blast of the Yovel horn.
Followed by TERUAH GA’DOWLAH – the great shout!

Are you ready? Are you watching? Is everything in order?
This time is approaching very quickly.

The Second Light Horse Charge

Moving the Australian Ebassy from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem.

There are 5 important cultural things you must know about Australians.

Firstly, Australians almost always back the underdog. The little guy, the worker, the single mum, the boy they said couldn’t play football but ended up leading the Australian side, the chocolate soldiers in Kokoda. We believe in giving people a fair go.

Secondly, we always stick up for our mate – even when he or she has done the wrong thing. When I was at uni, my mate Nigel was a jerk one day to a group of bigger, tougher guys. At the end of a lecture they surrounded him in outside the lecture room and it wasn’t looking good for him. Fact was, if he wasn’t my mate, I would have been part of the group that was going to teach him a lesson, but I WAS his mate. So that ingrained part of our culture meant that I had to go into that circle and let them know that there were now two of us. Mates stick up for each other.

Thirdly, when an Australian calls you an idiot, it doesn’t necessarily mean that you are, but often is an endearing term that actually denotes his friendship to you. If you are not an Australian, don’t try this. The word when said by an Aussie “You idiot” has a certain intonation on it that means “Mate” and not “Jerk”. When said by others, it is nearly always taken as abuse.

Fourthly, we seem to endure hardship better than most, which is why as a nation we spend a fortune each year on four wheel drives and camping equipment so that we can go and spend our holidays and live in voluntary poverty in campsites all around the country. It is why we get into fights and speak our mind on most matters. Maybe it’s a bit of the Irish or the Scottish in our heritage.

Fifthly, right or wrong, we are historically not good with authority, especially when that authority simply doesn’t make any obvious sense.

With that understanding of Aussie culture in mind, I turn my attention to the point of this message.
In 1917, the Aussies, along with British and New Zealanders did something really amazing and very important. The setting was Beersheba in the southern wilderness of then-called Palestine. The Turks, whose great empire was floundering, had control over the wells in Beersheba and a stronghold on the land, including the city of Jerusalem.

On the evening of 31 October, as a part of a campaign that included New Zealand and British troops in other places creating diversions, the Australian 4th light horse made an unconvential decision late in the day, and charged across 6 miles of desert under the cannon and gun fire of the Turkish troops based in Beersheba and took control of town and the ancient wells there.
“So what?” you say.  “Who cares about a well or two in the desert of Palestine? Gallipoli and Anzac Cove was much more important to Australians than Beersheba wasn’t it?”

Without in anyway diminishing the heroism and tragic losses of the Australians and New Zealanders in the infamous Gallipoli Campaign against the Turks, in terms of the big picture of the Kingdom of God, the lesser known battle at Beersheba had significantly greater importance and we Australians were the ones who made the charge. Taking into account the 5 aspects of Australian culture I mentioned before, this rugged, tired and thirsty band of men and their horses – mounted infantrymen, not cavalrymen, threw caution to the wind and galloped into the town of Beersheba and liberated it.

This started a chain of events that eventually led to the liberation of Jerusalem by General Allenby and ultimately to the reconstituting of the State of Israel in 1948 – just as the Scriptures promised would one day happen and indeed must happen before Jesus comes back. Yep, the Aussies were a significant part of the success of that campaign that changed the course of events in Palestine.

Since that time, we have always been mates with Israel. Think about it. While others ‘ummed’ and ‘ahhed’ about receiving persecuted Jewish people throughout the war, we said ‘yes’. When the time came for the vote in the UN regarding the resolution (181) to form the independent State of Israel in 1947, Australia was the first nation to say ‘Yes’. (Alphabetically we came before any other ‘yes’ voting nation – but we’ll claim it).

To this day, we have been called a part of the triumvirate – USA, UK and Australia that have stood strong with our mate Israel through thick and thin.
Even when the USA faltered under President Obama and UK reneged on her promises toward Israel throughout the last century, Aussies just kept walking on in amongst the big guys, when our mate Israel got himself into a pickle. Sometimes we rolled our eyes and said ‘You idiot’ (remember that is a term of endearment to an Aussie) at the same time as we were rolling up our sleeves to jump in and get in the fight.

Now one hundred years later, we have to lead the charge again. Yes. No one else, even the big guys, seem to have the courage to do what needs to be done. Our mate Israel is under attack again. Now I’m not personally particularly fussed on the physical city of Canberra. Yes it’s a beautiful city. But it’s cold, its dry, its built on Burleigh Griffin’s so called freemasonry design, and it’s in the middle of the ACT which is in the middle of NSW which is a long way from the rest of populated Australia – BUT it IS our capital and it was founded a long time ago – 1913, just over a hundred years ago.  And so as Australians we would all defend Canberra as our capital city, our seat of government, and would expect that every nation that desires relationship with our nation, respect our decision to have our capital in this more remorely located city of Canberra and expect that each of these nations would base its embassies in our capital city. To do otherwise would be an affront to us.

Israel’s capital – Biblically, historically, spiritually, culturally and politically has always been Jerusalem since King David took the ancient Jebusite city and made his palace there 3000 years ago. That’s right, not just over a hundred years ago like Canberra, but 3000 years ago. That’s an idea of how old this capital city of the ancient nation of Israel is.

Every other capital city in the wolrd has international embassies in their capital cities – but not Israel. No. Where are all the embassies? They WERE in Jerusalem, but out of fear and intimidation they were all moved to Tel Aviv. How would we feel if all nations decided to say to us, “We ignore your decision to have Canberra as your capital city and we will instead have our embassy in Sydney.”

Not happy Jan.

And yet, it’s an embarrassing fact, that we too have joined the world in its abandonment of the support of our Jewish brothers and sisters, buy submitting to world pressure to move our embassy out of Jerusalem and into to Tel Aviv. Why would we, Aussies do this? It’s just not us. We stick up for our mates, even if we are going to get hurt doing it.

I’m prepared to say that we made a mistake and we have to make ammends. Otherwise how could we ever look Israel in the eyes again and say the word, “Mate”.

I propose that we lead the charge again.

Donald Trump and Mike Pence have said that they would move the American embassy from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem: “it’s not a matter of if, but when”.
I have heard that some of our MPs have said, “When America does, we will.”

If we were still waiting for others to take Beersheba, there would not even be a state of Israel. No, with God on our side, Aussies charged Beersheba – surprising everyone especially the Turks. We need to make some strong leadership decisions and do Beersheba all over again. Our mate needs us. Israel is asking nations to move their embassies to Jerusalem to resolve the issue of Jerusalem as their capital once and for all.
Why not be the first. We are small of population. Not very polished and shiny in many respects. But we have the courage, the disposition to not just do the status quo, but to throw caution to the wind and impetuously charge.

From a purely secular sense, to move the Australian embassy to Jerusalem is the right thing to do. We all know that Jerusalem is the capital of Israel. Capitals are where embassies live.

From a legal sense, to move the Australian embassy to Jerusalem is the right thing to do. In San Remo in 1920, the League of Nations (representing the nations of the world at that time) committed to a legally binding document in international law – the Mandate for Palestine, in which Israel was to be an independent nation, sovereignly governed with its capital as Jerusalem. Non Jews were welcome to remain there, but the nation of Israel was to be the nation of Israel. It was to be inhabited by Jewish Palestinians. Arab Palestinians were welcome to stay or move to another 3 nations created at the end of World War 1 – Iraq, Syria (and later more than two thirds of the land dedicated to Israel was given away to form the nation of Jordan). The little bit that was left was dedicated to the Jewish peoples as their homeland.

From a Biblical sense, to move the Australian embassy to Jerusalem is the right thing to do. It is where Jesus will rule and reign from when He reutrns, so we would be aligning with the God of Israel and coming again under the great blessing of the Almighty in our support of His nation.

We need to ‘just do it’. Call the horses to attention. Everyone ready? The sun is going down, we can’t go back, the horses need water, the only way forward is the wells of Beersheba. Let’s just make the decision and go – we are Australians. That’s what we do!
