Genesis 12:6 Abram passed through the land to the place of Shechem, as far as the terebinth tree of Moreh. And the Canaanites were then in the land.

We’ve looked at the importance of the city of Shechem. Now let’s look into Shechem at the very place where Abram stopped – the terebinth tree of Moreh. Let’s take a look at this famous tree.

For a start the word for Moreh is in Hebrew
????????
and it means “to throw”, “to shoot”, “to teach”.
and became to mean a place where God spoke.

And of course this is where God spoke to Abram -in fact appeared to him.

And the tree was no ordinary tree. In fact Moses said there was more than one.

Deuteronomy 11:29 Now it shall be, when the Lord your God has brought you into the land which you go to possess, that you shall put the blessing on Mount Gerizim and the curse on Mount Ebal.
30 Are they not on the other side of the Jordan, toward the setting sun, in the land of the Canaanites who dwell in the plain opposite Gilgal, beside the TEREBINTH TREES OF MOREH?
31 For you will cross over the Jordan and go in to possess the land which the Lord your God is giving you, and you will possess it and dwell in it.
32 And you shall be careful to observe all the statutes and judgments which I set before you today.

Scholars say that the terebinth tree of Moreh is an oak tree. Others say it is Pistacia palaestina which grows prolifically in the region and can grow quite large and in groves.

Some scholars say that the Canaanites attributed trees to their ‘teachers’.

It is most likely that this tree, amongst other trees was a landmark. It was most likely a tree of great size and therefore great age – probably having started growing from the end of the great flood 350 years earlier.

An oak or pistacia seed being guided carefully by the hand of the Lord to float through the torrential and rapidly flowing flood waters and finally coming to rest in the soil of that land between the two mountains of Gerazim and Ebal.

And there it began it’s life to become the significant landmark that would draw Abram’s eye as he entered the land and cause him to stop and pitch his tent.

Here at this ancient land mark the Lord would appear to Abram. Abram would build an altar under its massive branches to mark the ground as holy and special.

It was both a LANDMARK and a FAITH MARK.
Say the work “FAITH MARK” out loud to yourself.

175 years later, Jacob would come and buy the land and dig a well and settle here.
He would bury all the foreign idols at the base of this tree – at the place of Abram’s altar. It too was a FAITH MARK.

Jacob’s sons would herd their sheep near this familiar landscape icon and sell Joseph into slavery – so sealing God’s plan to save them from a future famine and so preserve the nation and fulfil His covenant with Abram.

Hundreds of years later Joshua would return with a nation – now millions of people, descendants of Jacob and to this very spot. Here the nation declared allegiance to the Lord. He put a great stone there as a further landmark and a FAITH MARK.

Joseph’s bones were buried at the place where the old tree stood. A FAITH MARK.

Abimelech would be declared the first King of Israel here, under the terebinth tree.

Rehoboam would come to the tree to be declared King over Israel.

Jeroboam would make this site where this great tree once stood, his first capital of the new northern Kingdom of Israel.

And Jesus would speak to a gentile, Samaritan woman here and declare Himself the Messiah to her – so declaring that the covenant was not just to the physical sons of Abram but to all who would believe on Him as the Messiah.

The great old landmark – the terebinth tree of Moreh. It was a mighty FAITH MARK provided by the Lord to the nation of Israel and to the future spiritual sons of Abram.

Does your life contain a landmark/ FAITH MARK to the Lord , like the Great tree of Moreh? A special thing that draws you back to your commitment to Him?
Is it a place where you go to be with Him every day?
Is it a certain song you play and worship to?
Is it a person you go to who you know will draw your life back to the things of God?
Is it your church or group of people?

Let me know what great landmark/ FAITH MARK you use to continually bring yourself back to your commitment to the Lord.

This was so helpful & full of insight with a view & description that completely witnessed to my spirit was right on. Thank you very much. It was of interest because of some land we are trying to buy in Jacksonville, Tx. There is a Oak tree that is probably around 160 yrs old. A month ago I just felt like I needed to bring a shovel & dig around it. As I dug close to the base there was 3 large stones, 2 had some cement on them, so someone buried them.As a kid I would always put sticks & stones together & make something. Realizing I was making an altar. Checking references for altar in the Bible I came across Gen.12:7 but backed up one and read verse 6 about Shechem, a Oak tree, & Moreh. Wow !!! The passion translation of this verse was incredible. Shechem was a sacred place & meant between the shoulders.Shoulder represents all power & authority.Oak trees are symbolic of strength & specifically a political chief. That’s amazing with the Chiefs winning the super Bowl & the Bob Jones word about revival starting after Kansas City won.
Then Moreh meaning instruction, teaching, Oracle Giver. God will lead us ( Shechem) & instruct our heart ( Moreh) to trust in Him alone. Thank you for filling in the gaps & adding things I need to search out. Again thank you so much. Blessings Brad Dugan

Prayer is my place and position to get back to God. There is nothing else that does it for me than prayer. Thank you for all you shared, it was so much more than I expected to find out. As a good reader I will soon go back to all those additional events which happened by the tree to see it for myself and see the connection.

My search started in Google wanting to look at an image of this tree or the land where it once stood and your website was a reference to click on. So glad it was. I’ve subscribed. ?

    Thanks again!

I was reading Genesis, starting to read the Bible thru again, and being raised in Church, saved now for 53 glorious years, I’ve been been Sunday School teacher for all classes, song leader, then had to learn two songs a week, I only knew a few chords, but we bought an organ, our pastors wife is better than Liberachi(??HAHA), but she is an awesome piano player and has a voice to match, like a loud angel, her voice I could listen to day and night. A short story, I was reading the 6 chpt. of Genesis, and I am keenly aware of new things i,ve never seen before. I don’t know if all this is in my King James Bible, but I was reading from the New King James, , but I saw this scripture and wondered about it. So I stopped reading and looked up a reference, and am I amazed it brought you up on my P>C> and I read your explanations and am just thrilled to find new info, about “anything” New i find. I am 75 now, lost my standing ability 4yrs ago, am in a nursing home now, my sisters sent me a Computer, My babysister bought me some Radio ears, my daughter bought me a small keyboard, I have Bibles, books, I love to read, and I have about 50 puzzles here, i am more than blessed. I feel so unworthy, but I thank my JESUS, for dying for me, for saving me, and what talents I have I want HIM to use for HIS Glory. Your article was a great blessing. Keep up the good work!

Another Interesting thing about Oak trees is that they are considered to be a “keystone species”. Meaning their existence is vital to the ecosystem. Am I preaching now? It keeps many things alive. WE are oaks of righteousness, a planting for all his glory and splendor. Humans are considered to be hyperkeystone species. Now mix that with a God breathed born again human. Hallelujah. May we never lose our wonder!

My faith mark is the words I am inspired by faith to produce and release the content as a a balm from my own terebinth under the window of my youth

  • Jennifer Rusk Smith says:

In the summer of 2019 the Lord began wooing me and inviting me to come and meet him under the terebinth tree. So much has happened in my life since that time, as the Lord continues to reveal his destiny purposes in my life. Its a seat of Authority for me,, but also a place of relationship and renewal. Repentance and power. His call to come here often, with the promise of an open Heaven. To laugh, to cry, to mourn, to dance. ECCL 3: 1-15… This is a place, we determine we will no longer be bound by time or space. But be seated in eternity alongside Christ Jesus. The idol of fallen time, has NO HOLD ON US HERE. We are free to operate in our full authority. Becuase we have made his resting place, his seat of authority, that is not subject to time, Our hiding place. PSALM 91.

My faithmark is reading the Bible as much as I can. I feel the Presence of His Holy Spirit every time I read His Word. It’s a perfect guide for how to live your life. An easy way to get more Bible reading in is to listen to it on a Bible app. To me there’s no better way to dive straight into His presence. Even if I just open to a random page, His Word is living and always on time. Also praise and worship during the hard times is a must have faithmark. That’s where the real miracles start happening.
