We are looking at the group called the SONS OF THE PROPHETS who were at BETHEL. We have discovered that it was most likely Samuel the prophet who began a group of trainee prophets – disciples, but by the days of Elijah and Elisha, the groups had grown in number and were located in various places.<\/p>\n

So who was ultimately responsible for training these young men?<\/p>\n

The \u2018SONS OF THE PROPHETS\u2019 were part of a special school or guild that was OVERSEEN BY ONE SENIOR PROPHET who was referred to as \u2018MASTER\u2019.<\/p>\n

2 Kings 2:3,5 \u201cDo you know that the Lord will take away YOUR MASTER from over you today?\u201d<\/p>\n

The MASTER PROPHET was no ordinary prophet. He was often used by God to bring a word to the nation of Israel and other nations. He had an anointing to see the future, create cosmic changes, call for drought or rain and perform great miracles – as well as provide the training for the next rank of prophets – the SONS OF THE PROPHETS.<\/p>\n

For example look at God\u2019s instruction to the MASTER PROPHET Elijah.<\/p>\n

1 Kings 19:15 Then the Lord said to him (Elijah): \u201cGo, return on your way to the Wilderness of Damascus; and when you arrive, ANOINT HAZAEL AS KING OVER SYRIA.
\n16 Also you shall ANOINT JEHU THE SON OF NIMSHI AS KING OVER ISRAEL.<\/p>\n

Elijah is appointing leaders over nations. That\u2019s MASTER PROPHET type responsibility.<\/p>\n

Throughout the scripture we find these special men and women of God. Here are a few that I can think of.
\nMoses was one.
\nJoshua was one.
\nDeborah was one.
\nElijah was one.
\nElisha was one.
\nIsaiah was one.
\nJeremiah was one.
\nAmos was one.
\nJohn the Baptist was one.
\nPaul the apostle was one.<\/p>\n

They all had significant ministries to the nation of Israel, to the nations around them and ultimately to the covenant of Abraham and the Kingdom of God.
\nThey represented the oracles of God on earth. They were very essential people for the Kingdom of God.<\/p>\n

It is worth noting that none of these MASTER PROPHETS were in the royal lineage of the Messiah, as were Judah, Jesse, King David, the Kings of Judah and Jesus.<\/p>\n

Rather these people were from OUTSIDE the royal bloodline.<\/p>\n

So how were these MASTER PROPHETS chosen in the Bible?<\/p>\n

When the previous Master prophet finished his ministry, usually when he died (or in Elijah\u2019s case was taken up in a fiery chariot), how was the next MASTER PROPHET selected to take his place?<\/p>\n

How is leadership chosen in churches and ministries today?
\nHow is leadership chosen in YOUR church?
\nThe best man or woman? The one with the best looking resume? The one who is \u2018next in line\u2019 for the job? By the congregation? By the elders? By the board?<\/p>\n

How does this compare with how God picks leadership in the Bible?<\/p>\n
