Rabbi Elazar, a first-century Sanhedrin Nasi, asked what\n          Genesis 12:3 &mdash;\n          <em>&ldquo;in you shall all the families of the earth be blessed&rdquo;<\/em>\n          &mdash; actually meant, and answered with a picture of grafting:\n          God had &ldquo;two good shoots to graft&rdquo; onto Abraham &mdash;\n          Ruth the Moabite, ancestress of David&rsquo;s house, and Naamah the\n          Ammonite, ancestress of Solomon&rsquo;s line\n          (Talmud, Yevamot 63a).\n\n          Two women from nations Israel was forbidden to intermarry with\n          (Deuteronomy 23:3&ndash;4) became, by God&rsquo;s own design, part of\n          the ancestral line of King David &mdash; one for Judah, one for\n          Joseph and the house of Israel &mdash; and join them into one stick\n          in his hand, as a sign that God would one day make the divided house\n          of Israel one nation again under one king:\n\n          <em>\n            &ldquo;David My servant shall be king over them, and they shall\n            all have one shepherd&rdquo;\n          <\/em>\n          (Ezekiel 37:15&ndash;24).\n\n          This is the same &ldquo;one shepherd&rdquo;
